Small Town Eats - The Sandwich Shack
“Give me a Sunday morning, that's full of grace. A simple life and I'll be okay, here in smalltown U.S.A.” -Justin Moore.
While we are growing and sometimes feel as if we are bursting at the seams with the 5 o’clock traffic, Jesup is still a fairly small town (as in even if you don't know what's going on in your life, someone else will). In small towns, we can get comfortable with the routine. We tend to frequent the same restaurants and boutiques day in and day out. I have been part of this small town my entire life. We get excited when new things come in. I can remember when our Wal-Mart opened! How amazing would it be not to have to travel 30 plus miles to get to the nearest Superstore? But the excitement wanes and life carries on. (Is anyone here still excited about Wal-Mart?)
But then there are those places that come in quietly. I had a work session with the boss and office staff a few weeks back. Our tummies started talking so he asked if I’d go get us food from The Sandwich Shack. I looked at him and said, “Where is the Sandwich Shack?” He proceeded to give me directions and let me know they served the best pork chop sandwiches around! Now if anyone knows me, they know I like food variety! And y’all they have so much home-cooked variety! Sausage, rice and beans, loaded potato soup, homemade hamburgers, and so much more!
So I found this little out-of-the-way place and was greeted with cheerful faces who helped me choose and perfect my first ever pork chop sandwich. Guys, without a doubt it was probably the most tender and flavorful I’ve had. I’m generally not a pork chop fan. It can get overcooked and dried out with a quickness, but this sandwich was checking all the yes boxes! I added a few grilled onions and some cheese to mine and voila - perfection!
If you haven’t tried The Sandwich Shack you should give them a try soon! Owner, Mark Blanton, frequently posts the specials for the day on his Facebook page. He cuts the meat himself and seasons to perfection. He also makes the sausage! He and his partner Lynn Douglas work hard to create deliciousness for our community. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 11 am - 7 pm. They have an evening special from 3 pm - 7 pm offering $1 off of combos! Walk up and order or call ahead, (912) 402-3423
Small town life has its perks, but for a good while, an abundance of the restaurants tended to be relegated to fast food and buffets - which definitely have their place. However, I am grateful for a few more choices in the freshly cooked food department! We have been blessed with some great places recently including Bruce’s Kansas City Chophouse, The Strand Bistro, The Salad Spot, JaJe’s Place, and I’m excited about trying the newest ones, Just South of Athens, and Dolce Kitchen. I’m sure I’ve left out plenty of great restaurants. I’d love to review more places so message me if you’d like me to review other local spots.
